Compton, located in southern Los Angeles County, California, is one of the oldest cities in the county, incorporated in 1888. Known as the “Hub City” due to its central geographic location, Compton is part of the Gateway Cities region. Historically, it has experienced demographic shifts, transforming from a mostly white suburb into a predominantly African American community during the mid-20th century, and later becoming majority Latino. The city has faced challenges with crime and economic decline but has also seen periods of revitalization. Compton gained national attention in the late 1980s and 1990s through the rise of gangsta rap and artists like N.W.A. Despite its struggles, Compton has produced notable athletes, entertainers, and public figures. It is served by the Compton Unified School District and has institutions like Compton College.
